First, the Spirit speaks to us directly. He would tell us if we do something wrong or right, he may even show where to go or whom to marry, he may console us if people are accusing us, or he may admonish us if people are flattering us. In UBF, all of this should not happen. Only your director or shepherd may “give you direction” or “give you orientation” in UBF-speak, they are considered your final authority, not the Spirit. The Spirit is also often played down as “mere feeling”, and put in contrast to the much better virtue “faith” which is understood as absolute obedience towards the leader figures, i.e. the faith that they are leading you properly.

Secondly, UBF is based on works and manipulating people. If you believe in the work of the Spirit, you would not see any need to manipulate people, but let the Spirit do His work instead, and the conversion process would not be considered as your own achievement – but this is what makes UBFers so proud.
