CULT ON CAMPUS<\/strong><\/p>\n Cult Recruits on Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n Part One: In the Beginning…<\/strong><\/p>\n By Kim Van Bruggen<\/strong><\/p>\n Administration is warning students to stay away from a religious cult attempting to infiltrate<\/p>\n the college.<\/p>\n Known members of the Uni-<\/p>\n versity Bible Fellowship are at-<\/p>\n tending\u00a0classes at the college,<\/p>\n according to Brian Hanson, V.P.<\/p>\n Student\u00a0Affairs.<\/p>\n “They are primarily here to recruit,”\u00a0Hanson said.<\/p>\n The group has been active on<\/p>\n the U of W campus for the last<\/p>\n four years, before being banned<\/p>\n from the property.<\/p>\n They moved on to the U of M<\/p>\n campus in February 1988, but<\/p>\n were forced off the campus after<\/p>\n widespread publicity made re-<\/p>\n cruiting difficult.<\/p>\n “They call themselves mission-<\/p>\n aries, and the core of the group is<\/p>\n Korean,” Gordon Gillespie of<\/p>\n Manitoba Cult Awareness said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “It all starts very simply.<\/p>\n They’ll try to zero in on the lonely<\/p>\n ones. They’ll invite them out in<\/p>\n the evening to read the bible, or<\/p>\n take them out for lunch,” Gillespie<\/p>\n said.<\/p>\n “They use an orthodox bible,<\/p>\n but they put their own meanings<\/p>\n to it.”<\/p>\n The UBF started in Korea in<\/p>\n the early sixties. The headquarters of the group are now based in<\/p>\n Chicago under the direction of<\/p>\n founding members Samuel Lee<\/p>\n and Sarah Barry. There are UBF<\/p>\n chapters in the U.S., Canada and<\/p>\n eight other nations.<\/p>\n “Ultimately, they want you to<\/p>\n work full-time for them, recruiting students. They want you to<\/p>\n live with them.” he said.<\/p>\n “It starts out very slowly, but<\/p>\n once they get to work on you it’s<\/p>\n very hard to break away,” he said.<\/p>\n After a long struggle, Theresa<\/p>\n Chaisson, 23, has managed to<\/p>\n separate herself from the group.<\/p>\n “I had nightmares the first year<\/p>\n after I left. I’d wake up in the<\/p>\n middle of the night in a cold<\/p>\n sweat,” the second year RRCC<\/p>\n nursing student said.<\/p>\n Chaisson first came into con-<\/p>\n tact with UBF while nursing at<\/p>\n the Health Sciences Center.<\/p>\n “A friend invited me to bible<\/p>\n study.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “That’s how they approach the<\/p>\n students. They ask, ‘Have you<\/p>\n ever studied bible?’ or ‘Do you<\/p>\n believe in God?'”<\/p>\n The\u00a0UBF “church” is a house<\/p>\n located in Fort Garry.<\/p>\n “Once you’re there, they<\/p>\n shower you with praise and kind-<\/p>\n ness, making you the center of<\/p>\n their attention\u2014they call it “love<\/p>\n bombing,” Chaisson said.<\/p>\n “They’ll get settled into the<\/p>\n college and then send a certain<\/p>\n number of missionaries to ‘pioneer the college” (a term used<\/p>\n throughout UBF when they are<\/p>\n recruiting.)<\/p>\n “There are three Korean<\/p>\n women\u2014UBF members–en-<\/p>\n rolled at the college.”<\/p>\n “I’ve seen them hanging around<\/p>\n a cute little student and I could’ve<\/p>\n just died.
