Where, how and with whom the member lives and associates with<br \/>\nb. What clothes, colors, hairstyles the person wears<br \/>\nc. What food the person eats, drinks, adopts, and rejects<br \/>\nd. How much sleep the person is able to have<br \/>\ne. Financial dependence<br \/>\nf. Little or no time spent on leisure, entertainment, vacations<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">2. Major time commitment required for indoctrination sessions and group rituals<\/p>\n<p>3. Need to ask permission for major decisions<\/p>\n<p>4. Need to report thoughts, feelings and activities to superiors<\/p>\n<p>5. Rewards and punishments (behavior modification techniques- positive and negative).<\/p>\n<p>5. Individualism discouraged; group think prevails<\/p>\n<p>6. Rigid rules and regulations<\/p>\n<p>7. Need for obedience and dependency<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular;\"><b><a name=\"two\"><\/a>II. Information Control<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">1. Use of deception<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Deliberately holding back information<br \/>\nb. Distorting information to make it acceptable<br \/>\nc. Outright lying<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">2. Access to non-cult sources of information minimized or discouraged<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Books, articles, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio<br \/>\nb. Critical information<br \/>\nc. Former members<br \/>\nd. Keep members so busy they don\u2019t have time to think<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">3. Compartmentalization of information; Outsider vs. Insider doctrines<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Information is not freely accessible<br \/>\nb. Information varies at different levels and missions within pyramid<br \/>\nc. Leadership decides who &#8220;needs to know&#8221; what<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">4. Spying on other members is encouraged<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Pairing up with &#8220;buddy&#8221; system to monitor and control<br \/>\nb. Reporting deviant thoughts, feelings, and actions to leadership<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">5. Extensive use of cult generated information and propaganda<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Newsletters, magazines, journals, audio tapes, videotapes, etc.<br \/>\nb. Misquotations, statements taken out of context from non-cult sources<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">6. Unethical use of confession<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Information about &#8220;sins&#8221; used to abolish identity boundaries<br \/>\nb. Past &#8220;sins&#8221; used to manipulate and control; no forgiveness or absolution<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular;\"><b><a name=\"three\"><\/a>III. Thought Control<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">1. Need to internalize the group\u2019s doctrine as &#8220;Truth&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Map = Reality<br \/>\nb. Black and White thinking<br \/>\nc. Good vs. evil<br \/>\nd. Us vs. them (inside vs. outside)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">2. Adopt &#8220;loaded&#8221; language (characterized by &#8220;thought-terminating clich\u00e9s&#8221;). Words are the tools we use to think with. These &#8220;special&#8221; words constrict rather than expand understanding. They function to reduce complexities of experience into trite, platitudinous &#8220;buzz words&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>3. Only &#8220;good&#8221; and &#8220;proper&#8221; thoughts are encouraged.<\/p>\n<p>4. Thought-stopping techniques (to shut down &#8220;reality testing&#8221; by stopping &#8220;negative&#8221; thoughts and allowing only &#8220;good&#8221; thoughts); rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, constructive criticism.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking<br \/>\nb. Chanting<br \/>\nc. Meditating<br \/>\nd. Praying<br \/>\ne. Speaking in &#8220;tongues&#8221;<br \/>\nf. Singing or humming<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">5. No critical questions about leader, doctrine, or policy seen as legitimate<\/p>\n<p>6. No alternative belief systems viewed as legitimate, good, or useful<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular;\"><b><a name=\"four\"><\/a>IV. Emotional Control<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">1. Manipulate and narrow the range of a person\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n<p>2. Make the person feel like if there are ever any problems it is always their fault, never the leader\u2019s or the group\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>3. Excessive use of guilt<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Identity guilt<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">1. Who you are (not living up to your potential)<br \/>\n2. Your family<br \/>\n3. Your past<br \/>\n4. Your affiliations<br \/>\n5. Your thoughts, feelings, actions<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">b. Social guilt<br \/>\nc. Historical guilt<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">4. Excessive use of fear<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. Fear of thinking independently<br \/>\nb. Fear of the &#8220;outside&#8221; world<br \/>\nc. Fear of enemies<br \/>\nd. Fear of losing one\u2019s &#8220;salvation&#8221;<br \/>\ne. Fear of leaving the group or being shunned by group<br \/>\nf. Fear of disapproval<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">5. Extremes of emotional highs and lows.<\/p>\n<p>6. Ritual and often public confession of &#8220;sins&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>7. Phobia indoctrination : programming of irrational fears of ever leaving the group or even questioning the leader\u2019s authority. The person under mind control cannot visualize a positive, fulfilled future without being in the group.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">a. No happiness or fulfillment &#8220;outside&#8221;of the group<br \/>\nb. Terrible consequences will take place if you leave: &#8220;hell&#8221;; &#8220;demon possession&#8221;; &#8220;incurable diseases&#8221;; &#8220;accidents&#8221;; &#8220;suicide&#8221;; &#8220;insanity&#8221;; &#8220;10,000 reincarnations&#8221;; etc.<br \/>\nc. Shunning of leave takers. Fear of being rejected by friends, peers, and family.<br \/>\nd. Never a legitimate reason to leave.
