Hi Andrew, yes fear is one of many tools to control people in UBF. People are normally steered into having only 1 choice left, the choice of your shepherd or Korean Director. The purpose Christ gave us was to lead people to God, not to ourselves. We are not to build our own kingdom here on earth. Nor are we to live as kings over other people.

On my experience leader was surrounded like with a ring of fear – don’t ask me bad questions, obey me! Peoples are in fear to loose status, lose relatively(!) peaceful life and perspectives to create family, in fear of being trained. In response leaders are in fear of open discussion. And many peoples understand it but do nothing. Even Peter Kim in Kiev agreed that problem of fear exists. But what is done since that times? It seems more important to bring peoples to Jesus. But actually under this spiritual cover peoples are brought from dependence on obvious sins to dependence on leader. And this problem it is not unique to UBF. There are too many victims of such dependence. Any religious society may get to this state if will not actively work to overcome this problem. And it is soooo good to live without this power of fear!
