Four Ways to Identify Your Personality

4personality-typesYou’re just anti-UBF” (or “pro-UBF”). Or “You’re just a conservative Republican.” Or “You’re just a liberal Democrat.” Or “You’re just stubborn, selfish, self-centered, self-obsessed and stupid!”

No one likes to be categorized or caricatured. Yet, people do have preferences, particular traits, personalities, biases and giftings. Also, almost everyone has some (highly annoying) idiosyncrasy! UBF likes people who are loyal, committed and who do not question or disagree with or challenge their leader(s). Because of this UBF also does not like people with opposite traits. Here are some traits UBF leaders do not like. People are indeed different. So it would be beneficial to understand our differences.Read More

How To Seek First God’s Kingdom

Mt6.33Matthew 6:33 was my first key verse after I became a Christian in 1980. To this day, this verse prompts me to evaluate my priorities and my heart. It also spurs me on to love and good deeds (Heb 10:24).

My first application of Matthew 6:33 in 1980 was to read the Bible the first thing in the morning when I woke up, instead of reading my medical books first. At the time, I was a medical intern at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. This was very good for me. It helped me to set myself grounded and rooted in Scripture the moment I woke up in the morning. I still earnestly wish to do so, yet sometimes, more often than I care to admit, I make my expresso latte and check my emails first …. subconsciously I think!Read More

Happy Thanksgiving 2015 Everyone

WaterfallsTaktakNov2015For what am I thankful? Presently I am in Malaysia, the land of my birth, where my older brother and I will celebrate my mother’s 98th birthday this weekend! Thank God that her mind is still sharp and she is ambulatory. My homeland does not celebrate Thanksgiving Day. But here are a few random thanksgiving reflections:

  • The happiest story of my life: getting married in 1981. Indeed, if not for UBF I would not be married! God led me half way around the world from Malaysia to Chicago to attend a church that took it upon herself to provide a wife for me. This was nothing but God’s marvelous providential grace because I could never have gotten married on my own, and I knew it. The last 34 years of our marriage have been the happiest years of my life. I’m thankful that our daughter appreciates that her parents are such an odd couple, and that’s probably putting it mildly.

Don’t Trust Your Church Leader

Blurred text with a focus on leadershipDon’t trust your church leader is a command that one might never hear taught in Bible study or preached in church! As with my previous post–Christians Leaders Can Be Told They Are Wrong–this title is intended to be provocative. Yet it is a sound biblical command and teaching. Even Jesus would not trust people who seem to be very good, people who enthusiastically and excitedly came to him (Jn 2:23-25).

Christian Leaders Can Be Told They Are Wrong

pThe fourth most commented article with 266 comments on the original UBFriends is Galatians Set Me Free From Legalism. I wrote about how Paul, a “junior” rebuked Peter, a “senior” publicly. Paul then shared and circulated how and why he rebuked Peter in a letter to be read in all the churches (Gal 2:11-14). Today it is like sending out a mass email to everyone in the church to explain how a Christian leader made a big mistake!  Basically, Paul pointed out clearly and in detail why Peter, the senior leader, was clearly in the wrong. In that strongly hierarchical Jewish culture, this was huge and unthinkable.Read More
