Transition
Change. You cannot grow without change. Without the process of transition, evolution, adaptation and division, cells cannot grow into living beings. Division, then, is not always a bad thing. Division is necessary for growth and is part of every healthy group. And so “you be friends” is changing yet again. Here are some updates as to what is going on with our virtual community.
We are Prisoners of Hope
“The former South African archbishop Desmond Tutu used to famously say, “We are prisoners of hope.” Such a statement might be taken as merely rhetorical or even eccentric if you hadn’t seen Bishop Tutu stare down the notorious South African Security Police when they broke into the Cathedral of St. George’s during his sermon at an ecumenical service. “- Jim Wallis, God’s Politics
I’ve just finished reading Jim Wallis’ book God’s Politics: Why the Right gets it wrong and the Left doesn’t get it. I’m not going to pretend like I understand politics, but I do want to mention some noteworthy insights I’ve received.
Defending Donald Drumpf
Recently, I read an article about JK Rowling defending Donald Drumpf’s freedom of speech. She was speaking at Pen America’s annual literary Gala in New York this past May.
She stated, “If you seek the removal of freedoms from an opponent simply on the grounds that they have offended you, you have crossed a line to stand alongside tyrants who imprison, torture and kill on exactly the same justifications.”
Rowling is a “fierce opponent of censorship.” She claims that curtailing Drumpf’s right to speak diminishes her own “freedom to call him a bigot.”

How to Build a Great Church … from a Basketball Coach
The great coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich, gave lucid answers as to what makes a great team. He should know. He has won five NBA championships. He explains how to build a great franchise and what he looks for in players. His answers equally well explain how to build a great church and what he looks for in a Christian leader. By interchanging a basketball team and a church, here’s what he said:Read More
Confessions of a UBF Leader
Believe it or not, yes I was a UBF leader. I was a Shepherd, a Fellowship Leader and a Chapter Director over the course of two decades. I was an insider of insiders. I now realize one more reason why I participated so strongly–God had a plan to expose the UBF leadership through me. I knew KOPAHN theology very well. I understood the ins and outs of UBFism. I knew how to use the UBF-speak insider language well. I was “sold out for Jesus” and fully committed to making America a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Here are my confessions, which continues the confession series of articles on the old ubfriends site.
