My Life Narrative

l“Until the lions have their own historians, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
―African Proverb

Most of us former members have been written out of UBF history. Our pictures have been removed and our names have been erased. We are spoken of in the third person, as if we are dead. Thus, one purpose of this book is to tell the history of my former group from a collective former member viewpoint. UBF is actively painting the best possible picture of themselves to the world. This book is my attempt to reveal the nature of what is under all that holy paint. Healthy religion is about real transformation, not about painting over failures and shortcomings. These are the stories the group leaders do not want to be told. These are the stories the group will not discuss openly or honestly.

A Word for Current Members

ltrYou may be wondering what will happen if you read this book. Maybe you are confused about what I am doing. Should you believe the Brian who once spoke glowingly about our ministry? Or should you believe the Brian who now bashes and criticizes our ministry unceasingly? Should you believe the Brian who prayed so much and sat quietly in meetings, enabling our country to become a priestly nation? Or should you believe the Brian who now slams Korean missionaries at every turn?

Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God? Part II

The Dress

After discussing the Muslim/Christian worshiping the same God debate. I began to think that this topic is similar to the picture of the dress that shook the nation a couple months ago. Even now I see black/blue on the right in the picture at the top, but my sister only sees gold and white in all three dresses. (The dress is actually black and blue).

Around the world, couples who saw the picture would get into serious arguments. Peoples’ appetites were ruined. Everyone was flabbergasted that one could see gold and white, while another swore they saw black and blue. It shocked and angered many.

I am a Christian, but the terms I use might be different from the next Christian. When I say the same God, I mean as in point of reference. I don’t mean identical. Using mathematical terms we would say similar, not necessarily congruent. But I would also say there is absolutely only one true and living God.

Introducing Ubmarried.org

christian_coupleIn light of Samirbrazil’s article about Marriage by Faith (MBF) and the fact that marriage is such an important topic (the second most vital decision of your life). I would like to run a pitch before all of you respected ubfriends.net readers.

It’s not a new idea. There have been murmurings about it for quite a while.

It’s called: ubmarried.org

Rationale:

1.) MBF is time consuming. It takes a really long time to wait to get introduced to someone. Honestly, if you think about it, if, hypothetically, a given chapter has 5 eligible bachelors/bachelorettes, when that chapter director/Bible Teacher goes and asks a different chapter about potential spouses they usually ask only about one at a time and the other four are left hanging. This website will cut the waiting time. Very necessary as biological clocks are tick tick ticking…Read More

Proverbs 31 Refutes Marriage By Faith

rWhen I entered UBF, I was dating a girl. She also came to attend the UBF services. She was with me in two Sunday meetings, but I did not let anyone know that she was my girlfriend. I already wanted to end the relationship with her before entering UBF, when I saw that it would be difficult to keep dating. So I wanted to end the relationship. After a few months, I reported my relationship in a testimony during a 1-1 Bible study. I also told some UBF people about my relationship with the girl. When I told my Bible teacher, he asked me, with an attitude of reproof:

You want a dating or you want to serve God ??

For him, you either obey the rules of UBF or you are disobeying God. In the limited minds of the people of UBF, you cannot have a loving relationship and also be a servant of God. Worse, in their minds, you cannot be guided by the Holy Spirit to find the love of your life. When you get married in the UBF “marriage by faith” model you are not exercising your faith. You are just blindly obeying the instructions given by men trying to steal the role of the Holy Spirit.

Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God?

mc1When I lived in Turkey, I was often ashamed of being an American because of the generalization that Americans are nonintellectual and self-conceited (which is often very true with tourists from the USA). Thus, when I was asked about my nationality I would reply, “Filipino.” This past week, however, I have felt that same shame creep up again, but this time because I am affiliated with the Evangelical Protestant Denomination. Last Wednesday, February 24, I attended an event entitled, “The Same god? Dr. Larycia Hawkins and Ahmed Rehab at the Chicago Temple.” And I am heartbroken that Wheaton would lose such a Professor. I am also enraged that such a complex question would be boiled down to a simple yes or no answer. And that that answer would terminate someone’s career. I wish that Dr. Hawkins had been shown more grace. What happens at Wheaton has repercussions for the rest of the world; Wheaton is a representative of the evangelical community.
